Madrid, 1st of December 2025. The Spanish Consumer Organization, CECU, gathered key stakeholders from the Spanish value chain, from farm to fork, to discuss how to promote the Mediterranean diet and increase the consumption of legumes in Spain.
The meeting took place on the same day that the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge launched its public consultation for the Just Transition Strategy 2026–2030. The strategy’s main goal is to ensure that the transition to a low-emission economy is fair and socially just.
According to CECU, food and agriculture must play a central role in the strategy, as the food we produce and consume has an impact on our public health and climate.
“The Spanish value chain is ready to promote the production and consumption of more legumes and to support a transition to the Mediterranean diet. Now we need the government to back this commitment with dedicated policies and funding,” Sarahi Boleko, Food Specialist at the Spanish Federation of Consumers and Users (CECU), stated.
Over 60 people attended the meeting, representing the entire value chain, including public officials, civil society, farmers and experts in health and nutrition.
Rune-Christoffer Dragsdahl, Vice Chair of the Danish Plant-Based Food Grant, presented how Denmark is funding the plant-based value chain using a €170 million public grant.
Following this contribution, representatives from COAG, one of Spains leading farmers organisations, Alimentta, the General Council of Dietitians-Nutritionists, and ANGED, the association of distribution companies discussed perspectives from the producer, scientific, retail, and public health sectors, highlighting opportunities and challenges for advancing the protein transition in Spain.
