Nuremberg Exhibition Centre, 11th of February 2026. The organic and plant-based movements share the same goal of more sustainable agri-food systems and healthier diets for citizens – and are therefore natural allies.
That was the conclusion after a successful talk between key organic and plant-based actors at this years BIOFACH, one of the world’s leading trade fairs for organic food.
The alliance building has been especially strong in Denmark, where cooperation between the organic and plant-based movement has gained remarkable policy wins. A key win is the Plant-Based Food Grant, a government grant of 170 mill. EUR, where 50 % of funds are earmarked plant-based organics.
Demand for both organic and plant-based foods is growing, and plant-based consumers have a preference for organic produce.
Building on this preference, a strong message emerged during the session: That the plant-based and organic movements should join forces and work together to connect production, supply chains and consumption of organic plant-based foods, as well as joining forces to make positive changes at the systemic level.
In the panel was Marco Pedicchio, commercial director of Biolab in Italy, Paul Holmbeck, World Board of IFOAM International and Louise Johansen, Head of Programmes at the Vegetarian Society of Denmark. The talk was moderated by Laura Sauques, Senior Policy Officer on Sustainable Foodsystems at IFOAM Organics Europe.
