The Hauge, 17th of September 2026. Just a week after almost 75 organisations called for a Dutch action plan for plant-based foods, a motion was voted on in Parliament, requesting the Government to include the action plan for “More Plant-Based Food” in the coming work on the political initiatives with nitrogen policies and a planned food strategy,
One of the reasons put forward as an argument to include an Action Plan is that Dutch farmers and horticultural growers produce high-quality plant-based products, that more than 500 businesses are already active in this sector, and that the potential for growth is large.
The motion was put forward by Christine Teunissen, and received 79 votes in favor and 75 against.
“It is encouraging to see that our call to action was picked up shortly after we handed our plea to some members of our government. Still lots to be done, yet we need to have our government to join us to steer protein production and consumption more towards a plant-based food system,” says Bas Geerts, projectmanager More Plantbased Foods at the Dutch Transition Coalition Food.
“As the call to come up with an action plan has been politically linked to the work the government does on nitrogen as well as the food strategy our chances to have our call to action succeed has significantly increased and hopes are high“, Bas Geerts states.
